Skin Care From the Sun

With the weather improving, many families were out at local parks Saturday. While many parents said they never forget to use sunscreen several parents said they just thought it was to early for sunburns. KTEN’s Meredith Saldana reports.

Beautiful weather means lots of outside play time for kids. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation both UVA and UVB rays are dangerous for the skin.

Blistering sunburns early in childhood can increase the risk for skin cancer just as much as cumulative exposure.

I asked several kids and parents if they used sunscreen.

Jordan Klingbail says, “Yeah, I’m pretty burnt right now.”

Parent Jeff Wyman says, “My son burns quite easily so we have to use it.”

Brent Reef adds, “I don’t really sunburn. I usually tan it doesn’t burn me that bad.”

Many people told me that because their children tan and don’t burn they don’t use sunscreen.

However both suntans and sunburns are the cause of DNA damage that easily becomes skin cancer.

So, don’t forget to use sunscreen and even with the use of sunscreen if you or your child’s skin starts to get red, begins aching or tingling find shade or just head indoors.

I also learned that a persons risk of getting melanoma cancer doubles if they have had five or more sunburns.
