Alternative Treatments For Eczema

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

The following treatments have not been studied to the same scientific standards that we use to judge other treatments on our site. But we wanted to cover these treatments because many people are interested in them. As you read this information, bear in mind that more research is needed to say whether these treatments work.

Chinese herbal medicine

In Chinese herbal medicine, plants are combined to make special teas or to make mixtures that are put on the skin. The combinations of plants depend on a person’s symptoms. Some of these plant combinations may help control an overactive immune system and reduce inflammation of the skin.

We found one big summary of the research that looked at four studies of Chinese herbal medicine. Two of the studies showed that the treatment worked well. But the other two studies found that it didn’t relieve eczema symptoms. More research is needed to know whether Chinese herbal medicine can help treat eczema or not.

It’s important to bear in mind that herbal medicines are medicines. Like other medicines they can have side effects or have effects on medicines you might be taking.

In the past, some traditional Chinese medicines that have been on the UK market have been found to contain dangerous or illegal ingredients. A government report on the safety of herbal remedies has pointed out that some of these medicines are of poor quality.

It’s worth talking to your doctor or pharmacist if you wish to try a herbal remedy, especially if you are taking other medicine.

In addition to Chinese herbal medicine, studies have been done on a few other alternative medicine treatments. We’ve listed some below.

Massage

In one small study, massage helped children with eczema to cope better with their illness. It also helped them feel less anxious. But more studies are needed to know for sure whether massage helps relieve eczema.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy means massaging a person’s skin with oils (called essential oils) that come from strong-smelling (aromatic) plants.

We found one small study that looked at children who had eczema. Half the children were given counselling and an aromatherapy massage, and half received counselling and a massage with plain oil (not aromatic essential oil).

Counselling and massage helped to improve eczema symptoms and sleep, and the results were the same whether the massage was with aromatherapy oil or plain oil. We need more studies to know whether aromatherapy can help people with eczema.

Hypnotherapy and biofeedback

Although eczema is not caused by stress, many people think that stress, anger and frustration can make symptoms worse. Feeling stressed about things such as problems in relationships can trigger eczema flare-ups.

Also, when someone itches just about all the time, they can get into the habit of scratching. Scratching can make eczema much worse, so it’s important to break that habit. Hypnotherapy and biofeedback aim to reduce stress and also break habits that make eczema worse, such as scratching.

Hypnotherapy is a kind of ‘talking’ therapy. The therapist, called a hypnotherapist, helps you to become deeply relaxed. Then the therapist makes helpful suggestions. The suggestions might be aimed at getting you to stop scratching, feel more confident or feel less stressed. Or the therapist may give you ideas to help you stay calm and solve problems when you feel overwhelmed.

The therapist might show you how to use a device that measures signals from your body. The device could show how fast your heart is beating, how fast you’re breathing, or how tense your muscles are. The information you get from the device is called ‘biofeedback’. It’s feedback from your own body. It lets you see how the signals change when you do things such as change your posture or slow down your breathing. The idea is that you can learn to sense the messages from your body without the device and learn how to control the way you respond to stress.

In one small study, patients with eczema received both hypnotherapy and biofeedback. The treatment seemed to reduce skin damage and thickening, but not redness. But the study was poorly done, so the results aren’t reliable.

Irritant Contact Dermatitis As Skin Disease

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Eczema is very annoying and painful disease that can affect anyone of any age. Scientists believe that eczema may be affecting one fifth of children in the world and one twelfth of adults worldwide. What makes eczema different from many others is that most people who have eczema have no idea that they have eczema. One thing that can contribute to their lack of knowledge is that most of them have not had an outbreak of eczema and who had an outbreak of eczema figured it was just a rash or dry skin.

Eczema can be severe or mild symptoms and not from a bit of dryness and redness of the drought and severe inflammation and bleeding and cracking of the skin. The key for eczema is to identify the type of eczema and the treatment is either a drug or otherwise. There are seven different types of eczema and we’ve covered a number of other types of eczema and other articles will focus on another type of eczema. Irritant contact dermatitis will be the topic we will cover here.

Irritant contact dermatitis differs from allergic contact dermatitis, because the materials that comes in contact with skin. Irritant contact dermatitis has to do with substances that come into contact with the skin and irritated. Softeners and detergents are guilty in many cases. Irritant contact dermatitis often appears to take shape in the hands of people and faces. I think the reason why the face and hands to get involved because there is often a great chemical in soaps and face creams in hand. Many of them are artificial and chemicals can be very harsh. Not everyone is able to skin them and treat eczema is how the body displays.

The easiest way to get rid of irritant contact dermatitis eczema is to avoid the chemicals that cause irritation and replace them with free soft perfume or scent-free soaps and detergents. If you reduce what could be the cause of irritant contact dermatitis should find quite easy to get rid of this type of eczema and its uncomfortable symptoms. Again, if you think you have eczema if irritant contact dermatitis or other information you should consult a physician, preferably one that is schooled in the identification and diagnosis of various forms of eczema. If this article helps you get rid of your eczema that is what we are, and then please let us know by leaving a comment. Best of luck to cope with their irritant contact dermatitis or other form of eczema and look forward to hearing from you.

Probiotics and Pediatric Eczema

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

Is there anything to help with pediatric eczema? Topical Steroids helped my granddaughter for a while, but I worry about long-term side effects. Probiotics were suggested, I do not know anything about them.

Research suggests that good bacteria (probiotics) may prevent or reduce eczema severity in children (Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology online Sept. 2). American health professionals are less familiar than those in Europe with using probiotics to treat eczema, food allergies, irritable bowel syndrome and diarrhea.

I have several little skin tags in my armpits. I do not want to pay a doctor to cut them off.
Dermatologists can easily remove skin tags (small, fleshy benign skin growths), but it will cost you. Readers have offered suggestions: “Band-Aid makes a product called Clear Spots – 50 tiny square pads with adhesive around all four sides. I cover the skin tag tightly with a Clear Spot, and after a week to 10 days, it shrivels up and falls off. ”

“I have skin tags on my neck and chest. The smallest shriveled and fell off after a couple of days of applying New-Skin [liquid bandage] twice a day.”

“I am a nurse, and for years I have tied a piece of thread around the tag at the base, pulled it tight, made a tight knot and cut off the long ends. (It stings at first.) After three or four days , The tag turns black and falls off. It works every time. It helps to have someone do it for you.

Infections and Eczema

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

If skin gets very dry and broken, it can easily become infected with germs called bacteria. It’s important to recognise an infection early so that it can be treated quickly. If it’s not treated, it can get worse and spread.

Infections often start where your or your child’s skin touches skin, for example under the arm or in the groin. It’s good to check those areas regularly.

Some symptoms that can mean you have an infection are:

* Crusty yellow blisters
* Oozing areas of skin where blisters have burst.

Skin infections can be caused by germs called bacteria and fungi. So these sometimes need to be treated with antibiotics, which kill the the germs that caused the infection and stop it spreading Antifungal drugs are used to treat infections caused by fungi.

There are many things you can try at home to help control your or your child’s eczema symptoms. These might also help prevent flare-ups.

Which self-care treatments work best for eczema?

We’ve carefully weighed up the research and divided the treatments into categories. Treatments that are likely to work

* Moisturisers: Lotions, ointments and creams that help keep moisture in the skin often protect against eczema and can help relieve symptoms.

Treatments that need further study

* Avoiding certain fabrics: Some fabrics make eczema worse for some people. More…
* Avoiding detergents: Very often, soaps and detergents make eczema worse. More…
* Avoiding animals: Animal fur, feathers or skin can make some people’s eczema worse. More…
* Changing what you or your child eats: If certain foods seem to trigger an allergic reaction, you may want to cut them out of your diet. More…
* Reducing levels of house dust mites: Certain cleaning methods can help get rid of house dust mites, and special bed covers and sheets protect against them.

Other treatments

Some people use alternative treatments to treat their eczema. We haven’t looked at the research in the same way we have looked at research for other treatments on our site. But we’ve included them here because lots of people are interested in alternative treatments.

Probiotics To Your Baby To Prevent Eczema

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

There’s some evidence that probiotics or prebiotics might help prevent eczema in babies and young children. But we need more research to be sure.

We found one good-quality study (called a randomised controlled trial) of nearly 160 pregnant women who had a close relative with eczema. The women were either given probiotics for the last few weeks of their pregnancy and for six months after their baby was born or a dummy treatment (placebo).

The study found that when the babies were two years and four years old:

* 1 in 4 of the babies whose mothers took probiotics had eczema.
* Nearly 1 in 2 of the babies whose mothers had the dummy treatment had eczema.

Two studies have looked at babies who were given prebiotics in formula milk.

* One of these studies looked at children who were at high risk of getting eczema because they had close relatives with allergies. Taking prebiotics reduced the risk of eczema for these children. But this was a small study, and lots of children dropped out before the end. This may make the results less reliable.
* The other study looked at children who had a low risk of eczema. It found that having prebiotics made no difference.

What’s The Evidence For Pimecrolimus?

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

There’s good evidence that pimecrolimus can help relieve the symptoms of eczema. But because pimecrolimus is so new, there isn’t any good evidence to show that it causes less harm than steroid treatments. So doctors don’t yet know if pimecrolimus has significant advantages over steroid creams and ointments.

We found one summary of the research (called a systematic review) that looked at the results from 11 good-quality studies (called randomised controlled trials) involving more than 2500 people. After a few weeks, the people using pimecrolimus were much more likely to see their eczema clear up. The summary also found that pimecrolimus can prevent flare-ups. Pimecrolimus has also been shown to help babies with eczema.

Eczema The Itchy Irritation

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Eczema is not just about the dry itchy skin, or the cracked, broken, and flaky skin. Sufferers are prone to infection and a run down immune system. But it is also about a way of life that takes away simple pleasures like going to the swimming pool, wearing short sleeves, or enjoying a day without others seeing your skin and making hurtful remarks.

Eczema increasingly occurs in younger children, causing distress to both child and parents. Unless correctly addressed at a young age, some children grow into adulthood still with eczema.

Do you always have to dress carefully to cover up your skin? These conditions are often made worse with stress – and the more you stress about your skin, the more you are stressed. A vicious cycle.

Many of the medical directories state the cause of eczema as “unknown” and offer little help. But at Mayo Holistic things are different. They were able to help Jamie. His arms were dry, raw, and sore from eczema. His parents had tried lots of things to no avail. They were delighted when Mayo Holistic identified the cause of Jamie’s eczema and he is now problem free. As well as that his behaviour and temperament improved.

It has been found that certain foods, stress, and diet may lead to eczema as well as a host of other conditions. Using kinesiology testing, balancing the body, and practical advice based on years of experience in holistic healthcare, Mayo Holistic tests and seeks to find your individual stresses, and help you to become free from eczema.

Eczema Treatments May Vary By Person And Severity of Symptoms

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

If you’ve been diagnosed with eczema, you’re probably relieved to finally know what has been causing you all the discomfort and embarrassment. Your doctor or dermatologist will first explain what type of eczema you have and then he’ll go over eczema treatments with you. The type of eczema treatments will depend on the type of eczema, your medical history and the severity of your symptoms. The main goals of the eczema treatments will be to reduce the skin inflammation, control itching, loosen and remove scaly lesions, clear any infections and prevent or reduce new lesions.

It’s important to realize that there is no miracle or instant cure for eczema and you may have to try a few different eczema treatments before you find one that is working effectively. Most doctors and dermatologists have found that a combination of different therapies seems to be more effective in treating eczema. One recommendation your doctor will make will be for you to make some lifestyle changes. This may not cure the eczema, but it may prevent you from having future flare-ups as well as reduce any possible side effects you may have from the prescribed medications.

Your doctor may give you your preference as to eczema treatments or medication. One of the most common treatments is topical medication or steroids. Topical medication is medication that is applied to the skin such as creams, lotions and ointments. Topical steroids my be over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams or stronger steroids that require a prescription. Strong steroids are usually avoided with children, however. Some of the common steroid creams include Dermatop, Cutivate, Locoed and Elocon. Side effects such as stretch marks and skin thinning may occur if these are used too long. Many patients prefer to use topical medications without steroids, in which case, they often use Elidel or Protopic. These are considered quite safe eczema treatments for children and can be applied on the face, unlike the stronger medications. They are also effective in preventing flare-ups when they are applied at the first sign of itching or the rash.

Another type of eczema treatments that are often used are antihistamines. Antihistamines are quite effective as eczema treatments. One reason for this is that eczema is often thought of as being allergy-related. They are also recommended for children because they help the child to rest better at night without itching. Benadryl and Atarax are two medications that work well. Applying cold compresses also helps to relieve itching. In more severe cases, your doctor may recommend ultraviolet light therapy and phototherapy. Before you choose to do one treatment you must know all the risks for each treatment and you can ask to your doctor or dermatologist. As we know with the new technology improvement they can minimize it.
