The truth – skin care is not just for women; skin care for men is now not such an alien subject and companies want to make sure men look their best. Skin care used to be a foreign topic a few years back, but more and more men are now realizing the importance of skin care to maintain a younger looking healthy face.
So now let’s start paying attention to your skin and perhaps break some old habits…yes, changes in your routine. The first change is not so difficult because all you do is swap your current product (if it is not gender specific) for a men skin care product.
Now that you have your arsenal, there are only four categories to your routine. You will want to know and learn about the new routine because it will maintain healthy skin.
Cleansing
The men skin care routine begins with cleansing because it helps remove dirt, grease and grime from the skin and also helps prevent pore clogging. The inherent nature of a man’s oily skin makes cleansing an important part of the skin care procedure.
Note: The use of soap on the face is discouraged.
That is correct, do not use bar soap on your face. You use bar soap on all other parts of your body like feet, underarms, and unmentionable places so why would you even want to use it on you face? Besides,bar soap strips everything off of your skin.
It is good for most areas of your body, but not so the good on your face. However, you can get a product that specifically says facial cleanser.
Shaving
The guys’ skin care centers around shaving. Shaving foam, gel or cream and after shave lotion are a couple of important skin care products.
Note: Men should avoid alcohol-based aftershaves.
Shaving gives your face a minor exfoliation (removes layer of dead skin) and possible nicks, so your face will burn if you slap on an alcohol-based aftershave! Look for a shaving balm without alcohol, or even use a facial moisturizer (it will do the trick), because it will not only soothe but heal your skin.
It should also be noted that razors are important. The use of a good quality razor such as a swivel-head razors is preferable because they are known to reduce cuts.
In addition to these products and equipment, it’s also necessary that you properly use them. Be gentle when using your razor – use a soft and smooth action…after all it’s a matter of removing hair, not the skin itself!
Moisturizing
A man’s skin is generally thicker and oilier as a result of the larger pores and more active sebaceous glands. However, as a result of regular shaving, the skin can get dehydrated quite easily. Therefore, moisturizers should form an integral part of the skin care for men routine.
Don’t skip on moisturizing because if you do you will be more vulnerable to fine lines and wrinkles due to dehydration. There are various moisturizers available for men, from fragrance free to SPF protection.
Sunscreen
Although men’s skin is less susceptible to skin cancer caused by UV radiation, the use of a sunscreen is also important in the skin care practice – use a moisturizer that combines sunscreen with the moisturizing effect.
Another good choice for men skin care is the use of skin care products containing natural ingredients such as aloe Vera, sea salt and coconut. Natural antiseptic oils such as lavender and tea tree are also a good skin care means for men.
So there you have it, the truth about skin care for men – it’s not as difficult as many people think. All it takes is a few minutes a day so you have healthy skin now and for the future!

Many people give different advice and tips for keeping your skin healthy. After working for the last 15 years as a qualified nurse, which has now lead into running my own advanced skin clinic, here are some vital tips I have learnt over the years, that work for me and my clients…
1. Drink plenty of water. We recommend 3 litres, sipped throughout the day, to support maximum skin hydration.
2. Use a high factor sun block (at least SPF 15) at all times, ensuring the product you choose blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Remember, even on a cloudy day, you can still sustain sun damage, if you are not protected.
3. Eat a diet rich in Omega 3 – nuts, seeds etc – will help maintain your skill cell function and promote a youthful complexion.
4. Try to up your intake of anti-oxidant-rich foods and drinks. Fresh fruit and vegetables and juices such as pomegranate and green tea contain valuable anti-oxidants that help protect your body from aging at a cellular level.
5. Exercise regularly to maintain optimum cell functioning and increase blood flow to flush out unwanted toxins.
6. Get plenty of sleep. Doctors recommend 7-8 hours per night for adults, to give your cells and tissues the opportunity to repair themselves.
7. Avoid caffeine, salt, sugar and alcohol as all are toxins and have a direct impact on our overall health and as well as the quality and appearance of our skin.
8. Invest in a good quality skincare regime. Choose a programme that is tailored to your specific skin type. Remember products containing beneficial levels of active ingredients are rarely available off the shelf – consult an experienced skincare practitioner to discover what is best for you.
9. Don’t smoke! As well as giving you lines around your mouth, smoking robs the skin of oxygen and vitamin C and can literally double the rate at which skin ages!
10. Beware of harsh beauty products with high perfume content, astringent properties or scrubbing agents. These skincare ingredients upset the natural balance of healthy skin, can cause dryness and make our skin vulnerable to infection. Instead, choose perfume free products with a ph of around 5.5 that match our skin’s natural state.

The good news is that acne is usually a “transient” or temporary problem, meaning once you pass your teen years it is likely that you will never have to battle acne again. Admittedly however, sometimes severe acne can leave scaring or pockmarks, or continue into the adult years. Sometimes inflammation of pockmarks may result in permanent alterations in the skins hue as well.
What is Acne?
Acne comes in many different degrees of severity. Basic ‘acne’ referred to as pimples, are typically raised lesions on the skin that are usually not to painful. Sometimes a substance called sebum accumulates behind your first layer of skin overlying a pimple, this is typically referred to as a white head. The redness around a white head is due to inflammation that can be associated with pain.
What Causes Acne?
There are four primary factors that influence your susceptibility to acne.
Blocked hair follicles due to an overproduction of skin cells referred to as “keratinocytes.” These skin cells combine with a fatty material called sebum to form a plug in the follicle, resulting in acne.
Enlarged sebaceous glands, responsible for producing sebum. Enlarged glands are common during adolescence. These glands are concentrated in areas such as the face, upper back and chest.
Increase in bacterium growth.The increased sebum in the face, back and related areas promote the overgrowth of a type of bacteria referred to as “propionibacterium acnes” which results in acne.
Inflammation due to bacteria growth. Sometimes an eruption occurs as skin cells and follicles become inflamed due to bacterial growth.
Hormonal changes that typically occur during the teen years are often responsible for acne formation. Teens generally produce more sebum than adults, resulting in an increased incidence of acne. Other substances including oil-based cosmetics may contribute to a build up of fatty sebum in the skin, producing an environment that is more acne prone. Even excess humidity and moisture on the skin can contribute to acne.
Some oral contraceptives (birth control pills) can make acne worse. Women should ask their physician to prescribe a pill that typically has a low activity of androgens, such as demulen, ortho-cyclen, ortho-tricyclen, desogen, ortho-cept or yasmin.

Knowing the basics of skin care is a must not only to prevent acne and other skin problems but also to promote self-esteem in an individual. Let’s take a look on two of the acne-producing attributes and the basics we need to remember and do.
1. If You Have Oily Skin
Oil is good for the skin because it keeps it moisturized and younger looking. Oily skin may be an advantage because it inhibits the development of fine lines, wrinkles, and discolorations. It also tans gorgeously and is less likely to freckle. However, an oily skin may look shiny or dull. But too much oil spells A-C-N-E. Yes, excessively oily skin is actually prone to acne breakouts.
Here’s what we should do:
1. Wash your face two or three times a day. Washing it only once is not enough to wash away the dirt accumulated all in a day’s (or nights) work while over washing can make your skin dry.
2. Use products specifically made for oily skin. From cleansers, toners to cream you are sure to find the one that suits your skin. It is not always easy to find the best product. Experience tells me that it may take quite sometime and quite a few “experiments” on trying out these products before you find the one that is perfectly made for you. Ask your dermatologist for suggestions and possibly, prescriptions.
3. Use non-comedogenic make-up (water-based) to avoid acne aggravation. Comedogenic or oil-based make-up only adds to the oil that your skin is producing and traps more dirt on your face.
2. If You Have Enlarged Pores
Pores are actually normal and essential. But some people hate them. If the skin is not being cared for appropriately and regularly, the pores of the skin will eventually become enlarged. And you surely do not want this to happen because larger pores can trap more dirt and have it clogged, causing the outbreaks of unsightly acne. There are numerous ways to cleanse, refine or minimize pores. Here are some of them:
1. Use pore minimizing lotions and creams. You may want to try any Pore Refining Cream or Pore Minimizer Refining Lotions.
2. Steam your face. This way, clogged pores will be forced to open in turn making it easy to remove the dirt. Apply face mask as soon as you’re done.

4. Wash your face with lukewarm water. Hot water only enlarges your pores.

6. Exfoliate regularly. It not only a cleansing regimen but it also improves your pore appearance. Some of exfoliating products are used simply for exfoliating while some are used for other skin care treatment such as moisturizing and cleansing.
With proper and regular skin care, you surely are on the right track to lessen your present acne conditions, or better yet, maintain an acne-free skin.

Here, the 10 unhealthy behaviors mentioned most often by anti-aging experts and how to reform yourself.
FEELING OVERWHELMED BY STRESS
Since caveperson times, we’ve known excess stress lowers our immunity, boosts the risk of heart disease and generally makes us feel crummy. But now Elissa S. Epel, PhD, a professor of psychiatry at the University of California at San Francisco, has cell-level proof that too much stress triggers premature aging of the immune system. Mothers of chronically ill children who felt most stressed, she found, had the most extreme early aging of these cells. To unwind? “The first step is realizing you are stressed and noticing the signs you might feel your heart racing, or feel sweaty,” Dr. Epel says. “The short-term way to reduce stress is to do deep breathing, what we call diaphragmatic breathing.” The longer-term fix: “Make time in your life to do things that reduce stress.”
DRINKING TOO MUCH ALCOHOL OR DRINKING TOO LITTLE
It’s no accident that alcohol advice is following the bad news about stress. Putting your feet up and having a tall cold one is actually good for you. One or two drinks a day can lower the risk of dying from heart disease by a third or so, a study in the American Journal of Epidemiology found. Women are advised to limit intake to one a day, men to two. But don’t imbibe more than that, or you’ll up the risks of ill health, including strokes and cancers of the liver, throat and breast.
MOVING TOO LITTLE
“Inactivity is an addiction that many of us have,” says William J. Evans, PhD, a professor of geriatric medicine, nutrition and physiology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. But even a little bit of activity can extend our life, reduce the chances of being overweight, reduce stress and maybe even ward off Alzheimer’s disease. “The first step is to just make the decision to be more active,” Dr. Evans says. “That can be as simple as parking a little further away and walking or taking the stairs instead of the elevator.” Then work your way up to the exercise level recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: moderate-intensity activity such as walking for 30 minutes or more, five or more days a week.
EATING TOO MUCH SATURATED FATS
Saturated fats in meats, poultry, milk and butter can boost “bad” and total cholesterol and send you down the path of heart disease. Go Mediterranean, and train your palate to prefer monounsaturated fats found in canola, olive and peanut oil and polyunsaturated fats found in safflower, corn and flaxseed oil. “There’s growing evidence that a more Mediterranean-style diet is healthy, even if you don’t lose weight,” Dr. Evans says. One smart goal, according to the American Dietetic Association: Keep saturated fat intake to 10 percent or less of your total calories.
SMOKING CIGARETTES
More than one-fifth of U.S. adults, or 46 million people, still smoke, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. To reduce your risk of cancer and early wrinkling, grab some over-the-counter nicotine gum. In a review of 123 studies published in 2004, nicotine gum and other replacement treatments such as the patch upped the odds of quitting by two times compared to relying on willpower alone.
BREATHING POLLUTED AIR
Outdoor air pollution can cause coughing and burning eyes and is linked to asthma attacks and respiratory disease. Easier said than done, but stay indoors as much as possible when pollution levels are high.
GETTING TOO MUCH SUN
Every year, more than a million people in the U.S. find out they have skin cancer and another 55,000 find out they have the most deadly form, melanoma. Limiting sun exposure and wearing a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 cut the risk of skin cancer as well as wrinkles.
GETTING TOO LITTLE SLEEP
Being sleep deprived used to be a badge of honor. Now, lack of sleep has been linked to obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and memory problems, even in young adults. Clean up your bedroom so it’s a sleeper’s paradise, says Ronald Klatz, DO, MD, president of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine in Chicago. “Keep TVs and other distractions out of there,” he says. Install shades or blinds so the bedroom is pitch dark.
BEING OVERWEIGHT
Excess weight boosts the chances of heart disease, diabetes and even cancer, yet an astounding 64 percent of adult Americans weigh too much. The latest research suggests the type of diet you choose is less important than your vow to stick with it. When researchers compared four popular plans Weight Watchers, Ornish, Atkins and the Zone the weight loss after a year was comparable, they reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association. But the dropout rate was high for each. The key to success: Pick a diet that fits your lifestyle, and you’re more likely to stick with it.
EATING TOO MUCH SUGAR
Excess sugar can lead to weight gain and possibly heart disease. Nutrition experts advise keeping “added sugars” in snacks and cookies to 12 teaspoons a day on a 2,200-calorie diet, but the U.S. Department of Agriculture found the consumption was typically 31 teaspoons a day in 2000. To cut back, turn to fruits and sweet vegetables to tame the craving. Read labels to minimize your intake of added sugars.

Who doesn’t know the word aging?
This is perhaps one of the most talked-about topics in the country. In a society that prides itself with good appearance, aging is truly a major issue.
All people go through the same process of aging. It is as natural as life and death. As people get older, their skin will become less firm. Fine lines and wrinkles will also develop especially in the areas that are used often.
But despite being a natural and standard process, there are some factors that may speed up the development, allowing some of the signs to appear way before its appointed time.
Below are just some of the factors that make your skin age faster.
The sun
It may be something that we can’t get rid of as it will be there everyday of our existence, but you can certainly try to prevent it from wreaking havoc on the skin. The sun is the single most powerful contributor to wrinkles and lines on the face.
Exposure to the sun not only darkens the skin but can also burn the natural protectors of the skin, allowing the harmful UV rays to settle in. It can result in skin that appears leathery and sagging. In addition to this, there is also an increased risk of skin cancer with frequent unprotected exposure to the sun.
Experts advise for people to wear sun block all the times. This is especially true for people whose jobs are outdoors. For people who aren’t frequently outdoors, a sun block with SPF 15 is ok; but for those who are exposed to the sun all the time, SPF 45 is recommended.
Cigarette Smoking
Although it may seem farfetched, what we take into our bodies can actually affect our skin. Cigarette smoking, for instance, can increase the aging process significantly as the smoke can dry the skin.
Cigarettes also deplete the body of much needed Vitamin C, which is a key component in cell and skin renewal. People who are exposed to smoke are also susceptible to early aging. Some scientists even believe that smoke can be as damaging to the skin as exposure to the sun.
Alcoholic Drinks.
Another factor that contribute to skin aging is the drinking of alcohol. This is because alcohol can dilate the blood vessels in the body, thus increasing the blood flow on the surface. This may make your cheeks rosy red for a time, but over time, the blood vessels can be damaged, resulting in a haggard appearance.
