Do-Good For The Day And Protect Birth Control

October 11th, 2008

We’ve been covering the new proposed regulations by the Department of Health and Human Services to allow medical professionals to not only refuse referrals for abortion, but to allow the funding of “crisis pregnancy centers” and push women away from birth control and their reproductive choices.

On September 25th, HHS will close comments to the public, so get to it folks, there’s less than a week left. You can submit comments through Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, or email HHS directly.

Hillary Clinton and Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood, have a great op-ed in the New York Times today about the proposed rule. A snippet:

The rule would also allow providers to refuse to participate in unspecified “other medical procedures” that contradict their religious beliefs or moral convictions. This, too, could be interpreted as a free pass to deny access to contraception.

Many circumstances unrelated to reproductive health could also fall under the umbrella of “other medical procedures.” Could physicians object to helping patients whose sexual orientation they find objectionable? Could a receptionist refuse to book an appointment for an H.I.V. test? What about an emergency room doctor who wishes to deny emergency contraception to a rape victim? Or a pharmacist who prefers not to refill a birth control prescription?

Ortho Tricyclen Phasic or Monophasic

October 10th, 2008

Question: I am 21 and have been on Ortho Tri-Cyclen for 5 months then last month I switched to Ortho-Novum bcuz my clinic didn’t have the other. This month was my first period on the new pill. My period(at least what I think was a period) came on 2 days earlier and was extremely light and pink (kind of spotty) then I thought it would get heavy on the third day(which is the day it was suppose to come on) but I had no bleeding at all. Then the fourth day the spotting thing continued. I am confused as to why this is happening. I have always had a normal 6 day heavy period. Is it do to the switch of pills? The tri cyclen gave me no problems with my period. Could u please enlighten me?

Answer: Yes, it is likely due to the change in the type of BCP. Depending upon which Ortho Novum product you received, it may have been similar to your Ortho TriCyclen, or it may have been quite different.

The Ortho Novum 7/7/7 is the only one that is pretty similar in the level of hormones it gives each week of the cycle, as it is a tri-cyclic BCP just like Ortho TriCyclen. Any other Ortho Novum would be a bi-phasic or monophasic BCP. This would definitely alter your periods from what you’re used to with the Ortho Tricyclen.

If you did receive the 7/7/7 formula, it still may have affected your periods a bit because the chemical makeup is slightly different. Ortho Novum contains Norethindrone and Ethinyl Estradiol and Ortho TriCyclen contains Norgestimate and Ethinyl Estradiol.

In short - yes, the change in your periods is likely due to the change in your BCPs. I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well!

Israelis To Use Birth Control Agents Against Islamofascism

October 9th, 2008

Israel To Put Birth Control Agent In Arab Water

Dr.Moishe Pipick. — Minister of The Israeli Experimental Defense Agency — responded to a leaked and classified initiative by his agency to stop the out of control birth rate in the Arab world:

“I will say this — does the world need more suicide bombers? — does the world need more illiterate and abused and brainwashed children? - Does the world need more children who will become dysfunctional; — and become totally ignorant and angry and hopeless death worshiping adults? –Does the world need more people who will destroy civilization?

He continued; “They are breeding like rats - at a time when the civilized societies of the world are placing a higher priority on having fewer children — but children with the potential to lead more enlightened and vital lives and to achieve some measure of clarity calm and comfort, self fulfillment and happiness.”

“So — yes - said Dr. Pipick - it is true!” He said; “We are putting a contraception chemical in the water supplies of some Arab countries — and so now - when - they force their dirty Arab Muslim extremist schlongers into their screaming women — and when they knock these pitifull enslaved wives to the ground — rip off their Burkah’s - and shtup their brains out — they will be shooting blanks!

“Asked about world reaction to this arbitrary and questionable activity Dr. Pipick responded; “Look,these people are animals — they have no respect for sensitive and caring parenting. They knock out children like bugs with no regard for their health, welfare or education –enormous growing populations of neglected children, and none of their leaders cry out against the sickening conditions:

“And the Mullahs fill the youngsters with venom and hatred –they can’t even read or write — they memorize verses in the Koran they don’t understand — and by ten years old they are ready to don suicide belts — zombies manufactured by evil priests who worship death — it’s right out of a horror movie — except it’s real!”

“He went on;”And now that the cat is out of the bag you should know that while we are trying to control the human assembly line production of future Arab fanatics — we are also artificially enhancing the birth potential of our own people –and in an ironic twist — the people’s of northern Europe including Germany - through their lakes,rivers and reservoirs.”

“We felt the world did not need any more French than is absolutely necessary and the UK is just fine the way it is.(we are also considering putting birth control agents in all the USA red states )

“And - in addition - — i’m sure the world would agree with our plan to stop the explosive breeding in most African countries (if you want to stretch your imagination and call them countries)”

“The problem with the Africans - is that their testosterone levels are so high it’s very difficult –and their water is so polluted it weakens the birth control agent.”

“The world will be angry with Israel won’t it retaliate?” –said the bandit Israeli bureau chief –Elise mandelbaum.

Dr.Pipick replied; ” Sure –but the world is always pissed off at the Jews anyway.- I ask the world — do you want a bright future for your children — or do you want Apocalypse Now and a remake of the Road Warrior — for real?”

The Bush Administration’s Attack on Birth Control

October 6th, 2008

Probably the greatest liberation for women came in the form of reliable birth control. With the advent of the birth control pill women were no longer slaves to their reproductive system, having baby after baby, year after year. But, George Bush’s administration wants to change that.

The Department of Health and Human Services has proposed a rule that would require that any health care entity that receives federal financing — whether it’s a physician in private practice, a hospital or a state government — certify in writing that none of its employees are required to assist in any way with medical services they find objectionable.

Health and Human Services estimates that the rule, which would affect nearly 600,000 hospitals, clinics and other health care providers, would cost $44.5 million a year to administer. Astonishingly, the department does not even address the real cost to patients who might be refused access to these critical services. Women patients, who look to their health care providers as an unbiased source of medical information, might not even know they were being deprived of advice about their options or denied access to care.

One would think that such a proposed rule would have the supposed bastion of women’s rights, the Democratic Party, up in arms, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. In a letter to the Secretary of HHS, only 28 senators have affixed their signature. The signatories are:

* Senator Patty Murray
* Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton
* Senator Barbara Boxer
* Senator Barack Obama
* Senator Debbie Stabenow
* Senator Maria Cantwell
* Senator Frank R. Lautenberg
* Senator John F. Kerry
* Senator Bernard Sanders
* Senator Robert Menendez
* Senator Charles E. Schumer
* Senator Patrick J. Leahy
* Senator Sherrod Brown
* Senator Claire McCaskill
* Senator Ron Wyden
* Senator Richard J. Durbin
* Senator Sheldon Whitehouse
* Senator Jon Tester
* Senator Barbara A. Mikulski
* Senator Tom Harkin
* Senator Max Baucus
* Senator Dianne Feinstein
* Senator Blanche Lincoln
* Senator Russ Feingold
* Senator Benjamin L. Cardin
* Senator Edward Kennedy
* Senator Harry Reid
* Senator Christopher J. Dodd

The far right wing of the Republican Party, not content to rant and rail against abortion, in an earlier draft of the rule included with abortion commonly used forms of birth control.  In the latest version the rule does not attempt to define abortion, thus leaving it open to the individual health care provider to decide if they choose that birth control IS abortion.

The bigger problem with the rule is that it could affect many forms of health care.  A health care provider could object to providing an AIDS test or emergency contraception to a rape victim as well as dispensing common birth control means such as the birth control pill or IUDs.

The HHS rule is in conflict with many state laws and in conflict with Medicaid and Title X programs.

The fact is, most Americans – regardless of their position on reproductive choice — agree that increasing access to birth control prevents unintended pregnancies – and results in fewer abortions.  As a matter of public policy, it is utterly irresponsible for the federal government to hinder women’s access to contraceptive services.

I believe this is a last minute hail Mary effort by the Bush administration to cater to the far right wing fundamentalists.  It is shameful pandering that could make obtaining birth control and other procedures difficult if not impossible for millions of Americans.

Please, if you find this HHS rule as reprehensible as I do, contact your representatives and let them know women MUST have full access to medical care.

Where Do I Get More Information About Abnormal Uterine Bleeding?

October 5th, 2008

Not all patients with abnormal uterine bleeding are alike, and it is important that someone who knows you as a whole person evaluates your situation. The gynecologist (a specialist in diseases of the female reproductive system) is the kind of doctor, most qualified, to diagnose and treat such problems. We must also not forget the spiritual angle to solving the problem of abnormal uterine bleeding. For she said, ‘‘if only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well’’. Immediately, the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction,” Mark 6: 28 and 29. Remember to live a healthy ‘kidney life’. Till next week, stay healthy!

How is Abnormal Uterine Bleeding Treated?

October 4th, 2008

The doctor usually listens to the complete story of the affected individual. A thorough physical evaluation will then be done to confirm that the bleeding is from the womb and probably to unravel the cause. Appropriate urine test, blood tests, biopsy and imaging techniques, are usually done. The doctor, then, decides appropriate treatment which may include therapeutic dilatation and curettage (‘D & C’) in some cases. Surgery may be indicated.

Causes of Abnormal Uterine Bleeding At Menopause

October 3rd, 2008

A number of conditions can cause abnormal bleeding during the menopause. Women, who take hormone replacement therapy, may experience periodical bleeding. Any other bleeding that occurs during menopause is abnormal and should be investigated. Causes of abnormal bleeding during menopause include excessive thinning (‘atrophy’) of the tissue lining, the vagina and uterus, cancer of the uterus, abnormal flesh growths (‘polyps’) or fibroids, endometrial hyperplasia, infection of the uterus, blood clotting abnormalities (from the use of medications or otherwise) and side effects of radiation therapy.

Causes of Abnormal Uterine Bleeding Around Menopause

October 2nd, 2008

Hormonal changes around menopause can cause the inner lining of the womb to grow and produce excess tissue, increasing the chances that polyps or abnormal thickening (‘endometrial hyperplasia’) will develop and potentially cause abnormal bleeding. Women in peri-menopause are also at risk for other conditions that cause abnormal bleeding, including cancer, infection, and bodywide illnesses. Women in peri-menopause still ovulate some of the time and can become pregnant; pregnancy can cause abnormal bleeding. In addition, women in peri-menopause may use hormonal birth control medications, which can cause breakthrough bleeding.

Causes of Abnormal Uterine Bleeding Before Menopause

October 1st, 2008

Many different conditions can cause abnormal bleeding in women between adolescence and menopause. Abrupt changes in some normal body chemicals (hormone levels) at the time of ovulation can cause vaginal spotting, or small mounts of bleeding. Breakthrough bleeding can also occur in pre-menopausal women who use birth control pills.

Some women do not ovulate regularly, causing irregular hormone levels and intermittent light or heavy bleeding. Some women who ovulate normally experience excessive blood loss during their periods or bleed between periods. The most common causes of such bleeding are uterine fibroids or ‘polyps’ (abnormal fleshy growth in the womb). These irregular growths and tumours are composed of uterine tissue that distort the structure of the uterus and lead to abnormal uterine bleeding. Other causes of abnormal uterine bleeding in pre-menopausal women include pregnancy, cancer of the uterus, infection of the womb (‘endometritis’), or vaginal infection, blood clotting abnormalities, and some bodywide illnesses such as thyroid disorders, liver disease, or kidney diseases.

Vasectomies, The Only Choice Left For Men

September 30th, 2008

More and more young, single and unmarried men are choosing a radical form of birth control- vasectomies. According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, half of all pregnancies in the United States are unwanted. As a man, there are traditionally two methods of birth control; condoms and relying on a woman’s word that she has reliable birth control. There are clear drawbacks to both methods. Major pharmaceutical companies have recently shelved near-ready male birth control pills and injections. They cite “lack of interest” as their reasoning to cease the multi-billion dollar investment, but that choice has left young men who do not yet want to face the enormity of being a father dangerously turning to vasectomies.

Many media commentators, pro-women advocates and even legislators subscribe to the ideology “if a man doesn’t want to father a child, he should have used birth control.” The bias in that argument is very simple- couldn’t you say the same thing about women? Yet, if a woman gets pregnant, wanted or not, she then has the option of aborting or keeping the child. She alone has the decision, and should she decide to keep the child, the man has no choice but to financially step forward and pay child support or face jail time.

One and a half million American women legally walk away from motherhood every year by adoption, abortion or abandonment, yet somehow nobody labels them “deadbeats” or “deserters”. In over 40 states, a mother can return the baby to the hospital within a few weeks of birth- completely opting out of motherhood and any child support responsibility with as much ease as going to the dry cleaners. Yet, if the mother decides she wants to keep the child, she can demand 18 (or in some states 21 or 23) years of child support from the father, and he has no choice in the matter.

Feminists have long based their support for Roe v. Wade around the slogan “My body, My Choice.” Yet, men who share in the responsibility of child rearing and financial support have no choice, with their own bodies or futures. Fatherhood is not a right or a privilege that they can opt into when they feel ready. It is instead something that is thrust upon them, partly due to a lack of choice in their options of birth control.

Research shows that many men are unwillingly drafted into fatherhood. The National Scruples and Lies Survey of 2004 conducted in the United Kingdom found that 42% of the women in the survey said they would lie about contraception in order to get pregnant, regardless of the wishes of their partner.

Experts, politicians and pro-choice advocates claim that the current system is necessary because it protects children. In reality, over time, choice for men would greatly benefit American children. If men had the same birth control options that women have, then the number of unwed births (and the huge social problems associated with them) would be reduced. Choice for men means better parenting for children because more men will be able to become fathers when they are married, willing, and stable- a huge benefit for children and society as a whole.

Women’s advocates correctly note that pregnant women often have legitimate reasons for not wanting to be mothers, including youth, finances and the lack of a suitable relationship or marriage. Yet, all of these apply equally to men. Women have a choice- men should, too.
