Ow. That dull, throbbing ache is back in your head again and you have no idea how it started. You want to just lay down, put your head into the pillow and close your eyes. Many do not know what the cause for these headaches are. They seem to appear out of nowhere and can in some cases instantly strike you down. This article will look at the possible causes of headaches which may be the reason why you suffer also. There are two main types of headache. These are tension type headaches and cluster type headaches.
Tension headaches and Cluster type headaches differ in a variety of ways. Firstly, tension type headaches last for a long time, they are gradual and can be extremely difficult on the sufferer. While a cluster type headache is often fast, and extremely painful, but is much easier to get over than the tension headaches which you may suffer.
Tension type headaches are usually slow and moderate at first. More of a dull throbbing pain, which will continue to grow throughout the day. With cluster type headaches, 10% of people suffer from chronic headaches, which are near constant attacks of these type of headaches.
Doctors are having difficulty in finding the causes of all of these headaches. But there are some causes which are already reported to be having bad effects and causing headaches. The common causes of tension type headaches are overuse of painkillers, and stress.
Although you may not actually think or feel that you are stressed, it is quite often not something which is manifested until you begin to suffer from the headaches themselves. Quite often this results in a tension related headache, and it will build as the stress does. Similarly, painkiller over use is something which builds over time, we become dependent, and eventually the painkillers themselves can cause the headaches.
You know when you suffer from cluster type headaches because unlike tension headaches you will probably find that these come on quickly and will only last for an hour or two at a time. Although they may not last long, they are extremely painful, and so you should always try to eliminate the initial causes.
Two such causes can be strong smells and high temperatures. Going out in excess heat, or exercising when you are already hot can make you suffer from the headaches themselves. It is better to get into a cool place, or make sure you cool down as fast as possible. As is the same with strong smells such as perfume and petrol. When this happens, just get away from the smells and give yourself a chance.
Although the data is not conclusive there are two other causes of headaches which can be treated quite easily, but need to be diagnosed by your doctor. If you suffer from headaches after going out into the sun or being in a strong light, then you may be light sensitive and simply wearing sunglasses can help to stop this.
This is the same if you are suffering headaches after you have been straining your eyes reading or looking at the television for an extended period of time. If this occurs, visit your optician.

Chronic stress leads to extreme depression and requires extensive medical and behavioral treatment as well as stress management.

According to the American Chiropractic Association, nine out of ten Americans suffer from headaches. Dr. Janelle Havelka is using chiropractic to successfully stop migraine headaches in patients who previously had little help from traditional medicine.
“Many headache sufferers feel like there was no hope for them,” says Dr. Havelka. “There is a large segment of our population who suffer silently with headache pain almost every day. They often turn to pain killers to temporarily stop the pain. But drugs only provide short-term relief, it doesn’t fix the core problem at hand. We are using chiropractic to fix the source of the migraines and we are having excellent results.” Is there evidence that chiropractic can stop headache pain? New research shows that spinal adjustments - the primary form of care provided by doctors of chiropractic - may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that originate in the neck.
A report released in 2001 by researchers at the Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, found that spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck, and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headache than a commonly prescribed medication.
Dr. Havelka says that in recent years the medical community has embraced chiropractic because it offers treatment without the use of drugs or surgery. “In treating headache pain, most experts agree that conservative care should be tried before more invasive treatments are considered. That’s what chiropractic offers.”

Do any of you suffer from chronic headaches? I swear it seems like I get one everyday. Migraines, sinus headaches, tension headaches, pms headaches. It’s ALWAYS something. I used to live on Tylenol until it started upsetting my stomach (Excedrin Migraine was my FRIEND) and these days I gobble ibuprofen like it’s pez. (A little shout out to my niece Josie there…PEZ Lover extraordinare!!! ;))
You can’t get sudafed these days without offering the first born of your first born, 6 oz of plasma and the most sincere promise that you aren’t building a meth lab.
Seriously? My 12 tablets of sudafed do not a meth lab make. I never really realized HOW often I get headaches until I went to Florida recently and only got 1 (Brian says 2) headaches the entire week we were there. This says something to me. I don’t consider my life “stressful” here but something must be different because HELLO I’ve been back 2 days and 2 headaches. What is up with that?

There are two main types of headache - the tension headache, and the cluster type headache - both of which have different causes.
The two differ in the length of time that they will last, in the areas which will be affected, and in the effect it can have on your health. For example, cluster type headaches usually last for less time than a tension headache. But they can have extremely excruciating plain, and can come on with extremely little warning.
With tension headaches you may find that you may find that the pain continues for the entire day, beginning in the morning and meaning that by the end of the day you have to take some time for yourself. In opposition to this, cluster type headaches are often fast and are over a lot quicker than tension type headaches.
The causes of tension type headaches are not completely known, but there are some things which doctors believe may cause, or add to tension type headaches. These supposed causes are stress, squinting when reading, painkiller use and other extenuating circumstances. Lets look through them a little more closely.

The first of these causes is alcohol. Having extra alcohol in your system will instantly begin to make your headache continue to grow, and you will be more likely to suffer. This is quite often what we refer to as a hangover. This is also the same with strong smells. Smelling things which can have a detrimental effect upon your, such as petrol, for an extended period of time, can make you cause headaches.
Finally, if you are finding that you may be suffering from headaches due to sensitivity issues to light, then it is advisable to go and see your doctor as they may be able to give you some simple cures to help your headaches.
Similarly, should you keep getting headaches after you have been reading for a while, or even for a short amount of time. Or after you have been watching the television, then you should go and see your optician, as you may require glasses, and not using then can cause severe headaches.

Q. I seem to be getting a lot of headaches lately. I’m pretty sure it’s been caused by stress, but I was wondering if I should have it checked by a doctor.
A: You should definitely see your doctor. Most headaches are harmless, but they can be a symptom of a serious condition.
The American Council for Headache Education urges people to see a doctor if there are any of the following symptoms with headache:
Headaches that began after age 50; three or more headaches per week; taking a pain reliever almost daily; taking more than the recommended doses of over-the-counter pain relievers; stiff neck; fever; shortness of breath; unexpected symptoms that affect your eyes, ears, nose, or throat; dizziness; slurred speech; weakness; numbness; a tingling sensation; confusion; drowsiness; headaches that begin and persist after a head injury; a headache triggered by exertion, coughing, bending, or sexual activity; a headache that intensifies and persists; headaches that change character; persistent or severe vomiting; a headache that is your “first or worst.”
More than 45 million Americans suffer from recurring headaches. About 70% of headache sufferers are women.
There are primary headaches that are not related to another condition, and secondary headaches, which are. Primary headaches include tension, migraine, mixed headache syndrome and cluster headaches.
About 90 percent of primary headaches are caused by tension. These muscle-contraction headaches cause mild-to-moderate pain and come and go. Tension headaches are called chronic if you have them more than 15 days per month. They are episodic if you get them less than 15 days per month.
Most tension headaches can be treated with over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen, aspirin and ibuprofen.
The precise cause of migraines is unknown. However, research has demonstrated that migraines involve the actions of nerves and blood vessels. The pain from migraines is moderate to severe. They can last from hours to days and be combined with stomach distress. Prescription medications are often needed to treat migraines.
Another subcategory of primary headache is mixed headache syndrome, which is the combination of migraine and tension headaches.
Cluster headaches, which come in groups, are the worst type of primary headache. The pain hits behind one eye and is severe. Cluster headaches occur one to three times per day during a cluster period, which may last two weeks to three months.
Preventive medications are prescribed for cluster headaches. During a cluster headache, injecting medication or inhaling 100 percent oxygen may help. About 85 percent of cluster-headache sufferers are male.
Secondary headaches include chronic progressive, sinus and hormone headaches.
Chronic progressive headaches worsen and become more frequent. These headaches may be caused by a brain or skull illness such as encephalitis, inflammation of the brain. If diseases are ruled out, doctors will try to focus on preventing the pain from striking. Preventive medication may include antidepressants, muscle relaxants or other drugs.
Sinus headaches cause pain in the head and face and sometimes can fool you into thinking you have a dental problem. These headaches coincide with other sinusitis symptoms such as nasal discharge. Over-the-counter pain relievers and decongestants work well with this type of headache.
Hormone headaches come with changing hormone levels during menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause. These are treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, and other drugs.
Another type of headache is caused by taking too much pain medication. This type is called a rebound headache.

Since the brain itself feels no pain, headache pain comes from the tissues around the brain, the attaching structures at the base of the brain, and the muscles and blood vessels of the scalp, face and neck. Cluster headache pain may be related specifically to blood vessel dilation or to inflammation of nerves behind the eye.
The pattern of cluster headache attacks earn their name: episodic cluster headaches consist of active periods that may last days or even months, during which headaches occur in “clusters” every other day or as frequently as eight times per day. Headache-free remissions can last months or years.
During active periods, factors that may trigger attacks include alcohol, high altitude, air travel, bright sunlight, exertion or foods, especially foods high in nitrites. Drugs that dilate the blood vessels, such as nitroglycerine and various blood pressure medications, can also set off an attack. When the cycle is inactive, these triggers usually have no effect.
Cluster headache pain generally resides on one side, behind or around the eye or in the temples, and may be accompanied by hyperactivity, congestion, swelling and eyelid drooping or swelling. The pain may fluctuate before it subsides. Care focuses on controlling pain in acute attacks, preventing recurrences and minimizing the impact on daily functioning. Treatment usually consists of pain relief and headache prevention medications, but may include nerve injection, radio-frequency therapy or oxygen therapy.
Cluster Headaches most commonly occur in men from 20 to 40. People with cluster headaches tend to be sociable, active and responsible, so cluster headaches are sometimes called “the executive headache.” Because these headaches can be very disruptive, patient education and support groups are often helpful and comforting.

Researchers, doctors and patients have been able to identify many triggers for migraines. Knowing what triggers your migraines can be beneficial to you in that you can either avoid them all together by paying attention to staying away from your triggers or at least minimizing the symptoms by taking preventative medications when you know you will not be able to avoid your triggers.
Common triggers that have been identified are reactions to food or other allergy producing substances, bright lights, loud noises, stress that is either physical or emotional in nature, changes in your patterns of sleep, exposure to tobacco smoke or being a smoker yourself, fasting, consuming alcoholic beverages, and hormonal fluctuations. Some individuals have even reported that when they have a tension headache that often triggers a migraine headache to start.
Exploring these triggers
* Food or other allergy producing substances - If you happen to have a particular food as a trigger for your migraines…the reaction is cumulative; in other words…if you eat a large portion of the food item that is a trigger for you then the corresponding reaction is going to be huge too. The food as a trigger concept is not in agreement by most researchers so whether or not a particular food is a trigger for you is determined on an individual basis.
It is probably wise if you are experiencing a food trigger for migraines that you have a food allergy skin test conducted so that you can determine if what you are experiencing is a case of food allergies with headache being one of the allergic reaction symptoms.
One more noteworthy mention regarding food and migraines is that there have been some cases where migraine suffers have noticed that if they eat at a Chinese restaurant where MSG is included in the cuisine served that they experience a migraine afterwards. Excluding all other triggers, it may be possible for the individual to be allergic to MSG and have that allergic reaction result in a headache that could trigger a migraine attack.
We do know that headaches are a symptom of allergic reactions including reactions of an allergic reaction to food and chemicals in food such as MSG. We also know that tension headaches can trigger a migraine so the connection is possible between the ingestion of MSG and the onset of a migraine. Like any other triggers the possibilities of food being a trigger needs to be explored on an individual basis between the doctor and the patient.
* Bright lights and loud noises – Most of those who suffer from migraines will include sensitivity to bright lights and loud noises as a symptom of the migraine and not as a trigger. Migraines are a neurological event and as such science has many areas that are unknown. The exact cause for migraines is still largely unknown although cases have been studied on an individual basis and between doctor and patient what works best regarding things to avoid (triggers) serves the purpose.
If avoiding a noisy atmosphere such as a crowded, noisy bar helps you to avoid migraines, who is to argue? Avoiding bright lights may not be as easy to accomplish because we can control the lighting in personal spaces like at home or perhaps in a separate work environment like an office but if you work in a cubicle that you share with 20 other employees you are not likely to be able to control the lighting choice.
* Stress – Physical and emotional stress can be identified using a journal or by making use of psychological counseling. Counseling is also a good avenue for exploring how to deal with these stresses. Stress induced migraines are quite common because there is an obvious link between our emotional state and our physical state.
* Tobacco smoke and alcoholic consumption – These are both lifestyle choices and decisions about participating in smoking or drinking needs to be based on individual decision making processes. Certainly health concerns often force us to re-evaluate these lifestyle choices.
The unfortunate situation arises when an individual is forced to be exposed to and inhale second-hand tobacco smoke especially if that turns out to be a trigger for migraines. Avoiding second-hand smoke is not always possible if the one suffering from migraines is a child. This is where parental responsibility should kick in.
