Cough Headaches Screening and Diagnosis

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

Your doctor may recommend an MRI of your brain to determine if there are any structural problems that may be causing your cough headaches. During the MRI, a magnetic field and radio waves will be used to create cross-sectional images of the structures within your brain.

Treatment

Treatment differs, depending on whether you have primary or secondary cough headaches.

Primary cough headache

If you have a history of primary cough headaches, your doctor may recommend that you take daily medication to help prevent or reduce the pain.

These preventive medications may include:

* Indomethacin, an anti-inflammatory drug
* Acetazolamide, a diuretic that reduces the production of spinal fluid
* Topiramate, an anti-seizure drug

Rarely, a spinal tap (lumbar puncture) may be recommended. With this procedure, the doctor will remove a small amount of the fluid that surrounds your brain and spinal cord. This may help reduce the pressure inside your skull that may be causing the headaches.

Secondary cough headache

Preventive medications usually don’t help people who have secondary cough headaches. Instead, surgery is often needed to correct the underlying problem.

Exercise Headaches Treatment

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

If no underlying structural or vascular problem is causing your exercise headaches, your doctor may suggest medication to help prevent the headaches. If your exercise headaches are predictable, you may be able to take the medication an hour or two before a scheduled event, such as a tennis match or a hike at high altitude.

If your exercise headaches are frequent or unpredictable, you might want to take the preventive medicine every day. The most common preventive drug used is an anti-inflammatory drug. Propranolol, a blood pressure medication, also is used preventively.

Prevention

Exercise headaches tend to occur more often when the weather is hot and humid, or if you’re exercising at high altitudes. If you’re prone to exercise headaches, you may want to avoid exercising in these types of conditions.

Some people experience exercise headaches only during the performance of certain activities, and may prevent their headaches by avoiding these activities. A warm-up prior to strenuous exercise also can help prevent exercise headaches.
