A friend of mine suffers from frequent migraines due to a severe softball accident many years ago. Its awful to see her go through such pain; popping pills in an attempt to alleviate the pain. So I decided to do some research that my help her and other migraine sufferers to get through the pain in their head.

Consider the possibilities:

Seemingly unrelated problems sometimes bring headaches on. Dental disorders like cavities or abscesses, eyestrain or infections are common culprits. When your head hurts, consider whether the ache could have started somewhere else.

De-Stress your life:

95% of headaches are brought on by tension, research shows. In most cases, its not a tense situation, but how you respond to it. Attempt to manage your stress to keep those pesky headaches at bay.

Go with the flow:

One technique found to be particularly useful in dealing with headaches is visualization exercises in which you “go with the flow” of pain. Most people by fighting it. This may make the pain worse. If you flow with the pain, instead of fighting it, you give it the opportunity to flow right out of your body. Try this easy method: In a quiet room, lie on a carpeted floor or a bed. Close your eyes. Imagine yourself standing at the top of a stairway looking down into a beautiful, peaceful place. Slowly count backward from 10 to one. On each count, take a deep breath and imagine yourself descending one step. Go ahead and notice the pain, but continue walking down the steps.

As you take the last step down, notice that you have entered a beautiful garden filled with fragrant flowers, beautiful trees and a sparkling stream. Continue to breathe deeply, walk slowly toward the stream. Stand or sit by its side while you watch and listen to the gently rippling waters. Now imagine your headache pain connecting to and flowing into those waters. This may hurt, but just try to casually notice the hurt.

As the pain begins to flow, notice how the river gently washes it away.

Don’t drink too much:

Alcohol constricts the blood vessels in your brain. More than a drink or two can constrict them to the point of pain. And excessive drinking, of course, often leads to the mother of all headaches, the hangover.

Don’t smoke:

Smoking constricts your blood vessels and fills your lungs with carbon monoxide instead of oxygen. If that doesn’t give you a headache, some of the numerous other poisonous ingredients may do the job. Smoking injures your air channels, which can make you prone to sinus headaches.

Brush it away:

A simple scalp brushing can help treat and even prevent headaches. Use a brush with firm bristles. Start at the front of your head. Instead of long brush strokes, move the brush in little circles in one spot, then move it down to the next spot and repeat until you’ve brushed your entire scalp.

Sleep just enough:

No two people are exactly the same. For some, too much sleep can sometimes cause headaches. In fact, midday naps are notorious for bringing migraines. On the other hand, for some people sleep is the best antidote for a headache.

Stand up straight:

Poor posture, especially in your shoulders and neck, can scrunch up muscles and give you a headache. Practice good posture. Throughout the day, pay attention to how you’re sitting or standing and correct yourself if necessary.

Stretch your face:

A little muscle action can counteract tension in your head. Act like a kid: make weird faces to stretch your mouth, cheeks and forehead.

Take herb and homeopathic medications:

A nice, warm cup of rosemary tea can relieve a headache. For something more medicinal yet altogether natural, a homeopathic pharmacist or physician can prepare you a special concoction. Natrum muriaticum is said to relieve throbbing. China officinalis is used to treat light-or odor-induced headaches.

Causes Of Headaches

“Tension-type” headaches, or tension headaches, are the most common type of headache. About 30% to 80% of adults occasionally experience this kind of headache. Tension headaches are more common among women than men. These headaches are sometimes called stress headaches, muscle contraction headaches, daily headaches, or chronic non-progressive headaches.

Tension headaches usually begin gradually and often occur in the middle of the day. Headache Causes

Complaints of headaches commonly fall under the heading of vascular headaches, and result when the arteries in the skull dilate, often because of triggers that include hunger, caffeine deprivation, and hangovers. Other cases simple to diagnose include cases where people experience the effects of sudden physical and emotional trauma from an automobile accident. The violent jolts their bodies sustain, or the effects of their necks twisting, often result in headaches, because the trauma from pulled or tensed muscles triggers pain in the sensitive brain structures.

Cluster Headache Self-Care

The following measures may help you avoid a cluster attack:

* Stick to a regular sleep schedule. Cluster periods often begin when there are changes in your normal sleep schedule. During a cluster period, follow your usual routine.
* Avoid afternoon naps. Once a cluster period has started, taking an afternoon nap brings on a headache for many people.

* Avoid tobacco products. Nicotine may occasionally trigger a headache during a cluster period. If you’re prone to cluster headache, it’s best to stop smoking and avoid other tobacco products.
* Avoid glare and bright lights. For some people, excessive glare and bright lights can bring on a headache.

Coping skills

Living with cluster headache can be difficult. In addition to the physical symptoms, the chronic pain that often accompanies cluster headache attacks can make you anxious or depressed. Ultimately, it may affect your interaction with friends and family, your productivity at work, and the overall quality of your life.

You may find that talking to a counselor or therapist can help you cope with the effects of cluster headache. Or you may find encouragement and understanding in a headache support group. Although support groups aren’t for everyone, they can be good sources of information. Group members often know about the latest treatments and tend to share their own experiences. If you’re interested, your doctor may be able to recommend a group in your area.

Cluster Headache Prevention

Because the cause of cluster headache is unknown, you can’t prevent a first occurrence. However, a preventive strategy is crucial for managing cluster headache because trying to treat it with acute drugs only can seem hopeless. Prevention can help reduce the frequency and severity of the attacks and the risk of rebound headaches. Preventive medications can also increase the effectiveness of acute medications.

Preventive medications for cluster headache are generally used for either a short-term (transitional) strategy or a long-term (maintenance) strategy. The short-term medications work quickly but may have undesirable side effects. Long-term medications take effect more slowly but can be used safely throughout the cluster period.

Whenever a cluster period starts, you’ll likely start taking a long-term medication, many times accompanied by a short-term medication. After a couple of weeks, you’ll discontinue use of the short-term medication but continue with the long-term drug.

Short-term prevention

Short-term medications can prevent headache attacks during the period of time it takes for one of the long-term drugs to become effective. The main short-term preventive medications are corticosteroids and ergotamine. A nerve block also may be effective, particularly for some people who can’t tolerate the other medications.

* Corticosteroids. Inflammation-suppressing drugs called corticosteroids are fast-acting preventive medications. They belong to a general family of medicines called steroids. Your doctor may prescribe corticosteroids if your cluster headache condition has only recently started or if you have a pattern of brief cluster periods and long remissions. Although corticosteroids are an excellent treatment for several days, serious side effects make them inappropriate for long-term use.
* Ergotamine. Ergotamine available as a tablet that you place under your tongue or available as a rectal suppository, can be taken before bed to prevent nighttime attacks. Ergotamine medications are effective for short periods but shouldn’t be used for more than two to three weeks.
* Nerve block. Injecting an anesthetic (numbing agent) and corticosteroid into the area around the occipital nerve, located at the back of your head, can prevent pain messages from traveling along that nerve pathway. The occipital nerve converges with the trigeminal nerve, which connects to all the pain-sensitive structures in your skull. An occipital nerve block can be useful for temporary relief until long-term preventive medications take effect.

Long-term prevention

Long-term medications are taken during the entire cluster period. Some people with chronic cluster headache don’t respond well to the use of one long-term medication. In this situation, your doctor may recommend that you take two or more long-term medications simultaneously.

* Calcium channel blockers. The calcium channel blocking agent verapamil is often the first choice for preventing cluster headache, although the way verapamil works with cluster headache isn’t well understood. The medication may be used from the start of a cluster period until three to four weeks after the last headache. Then its use is gradually tapered and discontinued under your doctor’s direction. Occasionally, longer term use is needed to manage chronic headache. Constipation is a common side effect of this medication, as well as dizziness, nausea, fatigue, swelling of the ankles and low blood pressure.
* Lithium carbonate. Lithium which is used to treat bipolar disorder, is also effective in preventing chronic cluster headache. Side effects include tremor, increased thirst, diarrhea and drowsiness. Your doctor can adjust the dosage to minimize side effects. While you’re taking this medication, your blood will be drawn at regular intervals to check for the development of more serious side effects, such as liver or kidney damage.

Preventive medications under evaluation

Other preventive medications used for cluster headache include the hormone melatonin, capsaicin and anti-seizure medications such as divalproex and topiramate.

In addition, you may help reduce your risk of future attacks by avoiding alcohol and nicotine, which often precipitate cluster headaches.

Cluster Headache Risk Factors

* Headache after a head injury, even if it’s a minor fall or bump, especially if it gets worse
* Chronic, progressive headache that worsens after coughing, exertion, straining or a sudden movement
* Onset of new headache pain after age 50

Call your doctor if your child has head pain that’s severe or that causes him or her to miss school or other activities. Children who are too young to tell you what’s wrong may cry and hold their heads to indicate severe pain.

Definition

A headache involves pain in the head which can arise from many disorders or may be a disorder in and of itself.

Description

There are three types of primary headaches: tensiontype (muscular contraction headache), migraine (vascular headaches), and cluster. Virtually everyone experiences a tension-type headache at some point. An estimated 18% of American women suffer migraines, compared to 6% of men. Cluster headaches affect fewer than 0.5% of the population, and men account for approximately 80% of all cases. Headaches caused by illness are secondary headaches and are not included in these numbers.

Approximately 40–45 million people in the United States suffer chronic headaches. Headaches have an enormous impact on society due to missed workdays and productivity losses.

Causes and symptoms

Traditional theories about headaches link tensiontype headaches to muscle contraction, and migraine and cluster headaches to blood vessel dilation (swelling). Pain-sensitive structures in the head include blood vessel walls, membranous coverings of the brain, and scalp and neck muscles. Brain tissue itself has no sensitivity to pain. Therefore, headaches may result from contraction of the muscles of the scalp, face or neck; dilation of the blood vessels in the head; or brain swelling that stretches the brain’s coverings. Involvement of specific nerves of the face and head may also cause characteristic headaches. Sinus inflammation is a common cause of headache. Keeping a headache diary may help link headaches to stressful occurrences, menstrual phases, food triggers, or medication.

Tension-type headaches are often brought on by stress, overexertion, loud noise, and other external factors. The typical tension-type headache is described as a tightening around the head and neck, and an accompanying dull ache.

Migraines are intense throbbing headaches occurring on one or both sides of the head. The pain is accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, and aversion to light, sound, and movement. Migraines are often triggered by food items, such as red wine, chocolate, and aged cheeses. For women, a hormonal connection is likely, since headaches occur at specific points in the menstrual cycle, with use of oral contraceptives, or the use of hormone replacement therapy after menopause.

Cluster headaches cause excruciating pain. The severe, stabbing pain centers around one eye, and eye tearing and nasal congestion occur on the same side. The headache lasts from 15 minutes to four hours and may recur several times in a day. Heavy smokers are more likely to suffer cluster headaches, which are also associated with alcohol consumption.

Diagnosis

Since headaches arise from many causes, a physical exam assesses general health and a neurologic exam evaluates the possibility of neurologic disease that is causing the headache. If the headache is the primary illness, a doctor elicits a thorough history of the headache. Questions revolve around its frequency and duration, when it occurs, pain intensity and location, possible triggers, and any prior symptoms. This information aids in classifying the headache.

Warning signs that should point out the need for prompt medical intervention include:
• ”Worst headache of my life.” This may indicate subarachnoid hemorrhage from a ruptured aneurysm (swollen blood vessel) in the head or other neurological emergency.
• Headache accompanied by one-sided weakness, numbness, visual loss, speech difficulty, or other signs. This may indicate a stroke. Migraines may include neurological symptoms.
• Headache that becomes worse over a period of 6 months, especially if most prominent in the morning or if accompanied by neurological symptoms. This may indicate a brain tumor.
• Sudden onset of headache. If accompanied by fever and stiff neck, this can indicate meningitis.

Headache diagnosis may include neurological imaging tests such as computed tomography scan (CT scan)
or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Treatment

Headache treatment is divided into two forms: abortive and prophylactic. Abortive treatment addresses a headache in progress, and prophylactic treatment prevents headache occurrence.

Tension headaches and migraine headaches can be treated with aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen. In early 1998, the FDA approved extra-strength Excedrin, which includes caffeine, for mild to moderate migraines.

Prescription medications such as antidepressants and muscle relaxants can address tension-type headaches, and ergotamine tartrate or sumatriptan can relieve or prevent migraines. Cluster headaches may also be treated with ergotamine and sumatriptan, as well as by inhaling pure oxygen. Prophylactic treatments include prednisone, calcium channel blockers, and methysergide.

Alternative treatment

Alternative headache treatments include:
• acupuncture or acupressure
• biofeedback
• chiropractic
• herbal remedies using feverfew (Chrysanthemum parthenium), valerian (Valeriana officinalis), white willow (Salix alba), or skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora), among others
• homeopathic remedies chosen specifically for the individual and his/her type of headache
• hydrotherapy
• massage
• magnesium supplements
• regular physical exercise
• relaxation techniques, such as meditation and yoga
• transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS).
(A test that electrically stimulates nerves and blocks the signals of pain transmission)

Prognosis

Headaches are typically resolved through the use of analgesics and other treatments.

Prevention

Some headaches may be prevented by avoiding triggering substances and situations, or by employing alternative therapies, such as yoga and regular exercise. Since food allergies are often linked with headaches, especially cluster headaches and migraines, identification and elimination of the allergy-causing food(s) from the diet can be an important preventive measure.
