Common Headache Causes

Ow. That dull, throbbing ache is back in your head again and you have no idea how it started. You want to just lay down, put your head into the pillow and close your eyes. Tension headaches and Cluster type headaches differ in a variety of ways. Firstly, tension type headaches last for a long time, they are gradual and can be extremely difficult on the sufferer. While a cluster type headache is often fast, and extremely painful, but is much easier to get over than the tension headaches which you may suffer.

Tension type headaches are usually slow and moderate at first. More of a dull throbbing pain, which will continue to grow throughout the day. With cluster type headaches, 10% of people suffer from chronic headaches, which are near constant attacks of these type of headaches.

Doctors are having difficulty in finding the causes of all of these headaches. But there are some causes which are already reported to be having bad effects and causing headaches. The common causes of tension type headaches are overuse of painkillers, and stress.

Although you may not actually think or feel that you are stressed, it is quite often not something which is manifested until you begin to suffer from the headaches themselves. Quite often this results in a tension related headache, and it will build as the stress does. Similarly, painkiller over use is something which builds over time, we become dependent, and eventually the painkillers themselves can cause the headaches.

You know when you suffer from cluster type headaches because unlike tension headaches you will probably find that these come on quickly and will only last for an hour or two at a time. Although they may not last long, they are extremely painful, and so you should always try to eliminate the initial causes.

Two such causes can be strong smells and high temperatures. Going out in excess heat, or exercising when you are already hot can make you suffer from the headaches themselves. It is better to get into a cool place, or make sure you cool down as fast as possible. As is the same with strong smells such as perfume and petrol. When this happens, just get away from the smells and give yourself a chance.

Although the data is not conclusive there are two other causes of headaches which can be treated quite easily, but need to be diagnosed by your doctor. If you suffer from headaches after going out into the sun or being in a strong light, then you may be light sensitive and simply wearing sunglasses can help to stop this.
