Sexually transmitted diseases, commonly called STDs, are diseases that are spread by having sex with someone who has an STD. You can get a sexually transmitted disease from sexual activity that involves the mouth, anus, vagina, or penis.
According to the American Social Health Organization, one out of four teens in the United States becomes infected with an STD each year and by the age of 25, half of all sexually active young adults will get an STD.
STDs are serious illnesses that require treatment. Some STDs, like AIDS, cannot be cured and are deadly. By learning more about STDs, you can find out ways to protect yourself from the following STDs.
* Genital herpes
* Human papilloma virus/Genital warts
* Hepatitis B
* Chlamydia
* Syphilis
* Gonorrhea (”Clap”)

Having genital herpes can increase the risk of being infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, and it can cause serious problems for people living with HIV.
People who have genital herpes sores are more likely to be infected with HIV during intercourse. When you develop a sore, your immune system tries to heal it, so there are many immune cells concentrated in that spot. Those are the cells that HIV infects. If HIV in semen, vaginal fluid, or blood comes in contact with a herpes sore, the risk for infection is high.
The Compound Effect of Genital Herpes and HIV
HIV and the herpes virus are a troublesome duo. One can worsen the effects of the other. Research shows that when the herpes virus is active, it may cause HIV to make more copies of itself (the process called replication) than it would otherwise. The more HIV replicates, the more of the body’s infection-fighting cells it destroys, eventually leading to AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome).
People infected with both HIV and the herpes virus may have longer-lasting, more frequent, and more severe outbreaks of herpes symptoms, because a weakened immune system can’t keep the herpes virus under control as well as a healthy immune system can.
Treatment Issues
It’s more difficult to treat genital herpes if you also have HIV. Higher doses of antiviral drugs are often needed to treat herpes in people with HIV. Also, many people with HIV have strains of the herpes virus that are resistant to treatment with the standard antiviral drugs.
If you take antiviral drugs for genital herpes and the treatment isn’t working, your doctor can test the virus you have for resistance. If the virus is resistant, there are other possible treatment alternatives, including the drugs Foscavir and Vistide. These drugs can be given through an IV, or a Vistide gel can be applied to the herpes sores.
If you have HIV, ask your doctor if you should be tested for genital herpes. If you already know that you have herpes and HIV, discuss treatment options with your doctor.

Often it’s hard to tell if you have genital herpes by looking. The textbook symptom of genital herpes is a cluster of small fluid-filled blisters that break, forming painful sores that crust and heal during several days. Affected areas include the penis, scrotum, vagina, vulva, urethra, anus, thighs, and buttocks.
But many people with genital herpes don’t get these sores. Some people have no symptoms at all, while others get symptoms that can be easily mistaken for razor burn, pimples, bug bites, jock itch, hemorrhoids, an ingrown hair, or a vaginal yeast infection.
After you’re infected with genital herpes, the symptoms go away, but can flare up from time to time. Luckily, the first outbreak usually is the worst. And some people may have just one or two outbreaks in their lifetime.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections you can get by having sex with someone who has an infection. Having intercourse usually passes on these infections, but they can also be passed on through other types of sex, such as oral sex. Viruses or bacteria can cause STIs. Some of the most common STIs and their symptoms are listed below.
Types of STIs
Caused by bacteria
Chlamydia:
No symptoms may occur at first or at all, especially in women. Later symptoms for women may include itching around the vagina, a yellow, odorless discharge from the vagina, pain during sex, and needing to urinate often or having pain when urinating. Women may also have bleeding between periods or dull pain in the pelvic area. Symptoms for men may include pain or burning when urinating and a watery, milky-colored discharge from the penis.
Gonorrhea (or “GC”):
Men may have a thick, yellow discharge from the penis and pain when urinating or may have no symptoms. The opening of the penis may be sore. Gonorrhea doesn’t cause symptoms in most women. When symptoms do occur, women may have white, green or yellow discharge from the vagina, pain when urinating, spotting between periods, or heavy bleeding during periods. Sometimes fever and abdominal pain occur. Gonorrhea can cause sore throats in people who have oral sex or can cause pain in the anus in people who have anal sex.
Syphilis:
Early signs include a chancre (a painless, red sore). The sores may appear where you were touched during sex, including your genitals, anus, tongue and throat. The glands near the chancre may swell. A few months later, you may have a fever, sore throat, and headache, not feel hungry or have joint pain. A scaly rash may appear on the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet. After these symptoms pass, you may not have any symptoms for a number of years. When the symptoms return, the infections can affect the brain, spinal cord, and skin and bone.
Caused by viruses
Hepatitis B:
Symptoms may include muscle aches, fever, tiredness, loss of appetite, headache and dizziness. As the disease worsens, you may have dark urine, loose, light-coloured stools, yellow eyes and skin, and tenderness in the liver area (just below the ribs on the right side). Hepatitis B can be fatal if it leads to liver failure or liver cancer.
Herpes:
Symptoms start with tingling or itching around your genitals. Small blisters may form in the area and then pop open. When this happens, you might feel burning, especially when urinating. The sores then turn to scabs. During the first outbreak, you might have swollen glands, fever and body aches. But some people don’t have such obvious symptoms. Outbreaks may occur for the rest of your life, but usually become less frequent and less painful with time.
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV):
HIV is the virus that causes AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). It weakens your body’s ability to fight off disease. As your body’s immune system weakens, illnesses begin to develop until you can no longer fight them off. Symptoms may take years to develop and may include unusual infections, unexplained fatigue, night sweats and weight loss.
Human papillomavirus (HPV):
HPV may cause a growth of soft, flesh-coloured warts around the genital area or on the cervix. The warts are painless, but may be bothersome because of the way they look. Sometimes the virus causes warts that can’t be seen by the naked eye. There is a link between some types of HPV and cancer of the cervix; this is why Pap smears are so important.

See your doctor if you’re at risk for having an STI or if you have any concerns about whether you have one. Most STIs can cause further problems if not treated.
Chlamydia can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women (a disease that can cause women not to be able to have children) and epididymitis in men (painful swelling of the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles).
Gonorrhea can lead to arthritis and PID. HPV (the virus that cause venereal warts) can lead to cancer of the cervix or penis, and syphilis can lead to paralysis, mental problems, heart damage, blindness and death.
Most STIs can be diagnosed through an exam by your doctor, a culture of the secretions from your vagina or penis, a blood test or a urine test, depending on the type of infection.

In many instances, people with genital herpes know the virus is active because they have symptoms, such as lesions. But this isn’t always the case.
The herpes virus can become active without causing symptoms. During these times, small amounts of the virus are present on the skin, often at the place of first infection. This reactivation without symptoms, known as “asymptomatic shedding,” may also occur in rectal tissue or in fluids from the penis and vagina.
“Even if you’re asymptomatic, you can transmit the virus,” says Stanka Kukich, M.D., a medical team leader in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. In fact, studies have shown that most people get HSV from sexual contact during times of asymptomatic viral shedding.
Researchers have found that people with HSV-2 genital herpes tend to have more shedding than those with HSV-1. In addition, people with new infections are more likely to shed the virus than those with an infection more than a year old. Those with frequent recurrences may also shed the virus more often, but this is still an area being studied.

Herpes, both genital and oral is caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus. There are two strains of this virus, HSV-1 AND HSV-2. HSV-1 is known to cause oral Herpes, while genital herpes is caused by the HSV-2 virus.
The common symptom for these two diseases is the appearance of blisters and sores on the body; the difference lies on the part of the body they appear. In case of oral herpes, they appear on the lips, in and on the mouth. In genital Herpes, the sores appear on the genital area inside the vagina or on the cervix in the women and on the penis in the males, as also in the urinary tract of both men and women.
Herpes lesions first appear as small red burns then mature into blisters that later become sores. After a few weeks, these sores dry up and heal without scaling.
The first attack of the Herpes virus is called the primary episode. The symptoms appear within two to ten days of the infection and last for about two to three weeks. The first most noticeable symptom of the disease is the itching that the infected person feels when the sores appear. In case of oral herpes, the gums become red and swollen, and in some cases, the tongues develop a white coating.
Other symptoms of oral herpes include fever, muscle ache, difficulty eating, and feeling of irritability. It is important to remember that both oral herpes and genital herpes are infectious diseases.
In both variants of the disease, in most cases, there are no visible symptoms, or even when there are sores and blisters, people generally don’t identify them with herpes. Therefore, infected people unintentionally transfer the disease through physical contact- be it touching, kissing, or sexual activity.
