Yes, there is a test for genital herpes. A doctor can take a sample from what appears to be a herpes sore and examine it under a microscope. You can also have a blood test. The blood test looks for antibodies to the virus that your immune system would have made when you were infected. HSV-2 almost always infects the genitals, so if antibodies to HSV-2 are detected in your blood, you probably have genital herpes.
A blood test that shows antibodies to HSV-1 means you could have genital or oral herpes. That’s because oral herpes, typically caused by HSV-1, can be spread to the genitals during oral sex.

An estimated eighty percent of all people get cold sore outbreaks. They can occur in people of all races and ages. There is no cure for cold sores – once the virus enters the system, there is usually a high recurrence of painful, unsightly sores. Cold sores are sometimes also called oral herpes or fever blisters.
Usually, the infection follows a localized itching and tingling a day or two before breakout appears. The area becomes inflamed with a sensation of heat or burning, and can be very painful and tender. The sores become apparent as a cluster of small blisters, which can fill with a yellowish fluid and burst. The sores then develop a crust or scab, which dries up and falls off.
To Get Rid of Cold Sores, You Have to Attack the Cause: Viral Pathogens
Cold sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1(HSV1). There is no cure for the herpes virus, but treating cold sores can minimize the length of healing time and recurrence of outbreaks.
The Electron-Activeâ„¢ Silver Oxide in Terrasil fights the virus on contact so your cold sore can begin to heal and fade faster. This means the virus is weaker at the end of the outbreak, lengthening the time until the next one. And our customers have reported that when they treated cold sores with Terrasilâ„¢ at the first warning of a pending occurrence (slight tingling or burning sensation), the cold sore was entirely avoided. Formulated to Perform FAST
Kills the irritants and prevents infection
Extensive research has shown that Silver and Oxygen are two of earth’s strongest natural germ killers. Upon being absorbed, the Patented Silver Oxide in Terrasil® Cream (manufactured by Aidance Skincare) begins attacking the virus that causes cold sore symptoms. Oxygen (oxide) fosters the growth of tiny blood vessels under your skin surface, carrying nutrients to counteract viral pathogens that cause itching, soreness and inflammation. The moment you rub Terrasil into your affected skin the healing begins.
Reduces inflammation, discomfort and itching
Natural ingredients in Terrasil (Jojoba, Organic Beeswax and Essential Oil) provide soothing relief on contact so the inflammation, itchiness, and discomfort can be quickly reduced. Each of theses natural ingredients have long histories of providing outstanding benefits in skin therapy and sore treatment.
Heals damaged skin and prevents scarring
Any time our skin is damaged by a severe rash or other disruption, there is a chance of scarring or permanent blemish. The key to preventing this is quickly growing new healthy skin tissue. Terrasil’s Patented Silver Oxide promotes the growth of new healthy skin cells in two ways: a) An elevation in oxygen fosters the growth of tiny blood vessels that funnel in important nutrients and keeps existing blood vessels open. Oxygen also helps produce collagen, the main wound-repairing connective tissue in in skin. b) Subtle electrical energy is released from the Silver Oxide at the wound site, which studies have shown stimulates the growth of new cellular tissue.

* Do not have sex with someone who has an open sore on his or her sex organs.
* Always use a latex condom during sex.
* Limit your number of sex partners.
Taking antiviral medications (like Valtrex) can reduce the risk of a person with genital herpes from spreading the disease, but that doesn’t eliminate the risk. Be sure to practice the measures listed above to decrease risk.

Your doctor can diagnose genital herpes by visual inspection if the outbreak is typical, and by taking a sample from the sore(s). But, HSV infections can be difficult to diagnose between outbreaks. Your doctor may check for ulcers internally — on the cervix in women and the urethra in men. Blood tests that detect HSV-1 or HSV-2 infection may be helpful, although the results are not always easy to interpret.

Treating and suppressing the human papillomavirus pretty much boils down to keeping your body healthy, ready to combat outbreaks as soon they start to appear. A truly healthy person will be able to prevent a majority of outbreaks before they ever happen. In addition to healthy sleep and regular exercise, a well balanced, low-arginine diet is essential for those combating the effects of the herpes virus. After a few months on the below suggested diet you should see significant changes in the frequency of outbreaks.
Acidic food and drinks are the most important thing for you to avoid. When your body’s pH balance shifts due to these food, warts seem to sneak their way up to the surface. Fruits and vegetables are your friends. You may even consider cutting out red meat, and replacing it with poultry and fish. Vitamin and antioxidant rich foods will help strengthen the immune system against HPV. Vitamins C and E are particularly important.
To further strengthen the immune system, many herpes sufferers turn to dietary supplements potent in vitamins, lysine, monolaurin, and lauric acid. The vitamins will fortify the immune system while the monolaurin and lauric acid weakens the herpes virus. The dietary supplement you choose should contain 100% pure monolaurin. Be wary of supplements that contain large amounts of fillers. Avoid products advertising pure lauric acid. Lauric acid is corrosive and is not good for your system over time. Pure monolaurin however, is not an amino acid.
Lysine, monolaurin, and lauric acid can also be found in a variety of food. Dairy products, fish, and beef are an excellent source of lysine. Eating a lot of these foods will suppress outbreaks and limit their occurrence. Lauric acid can be found in dairy products as well, in addition to goat’s milk products, and coconut oil. The living culture found in yogurt was also proven to prevent future outbreaks.
Foods with high concentrations of arginine should be avoided at all cost, these are commonly the host amino acid for the herpes virus. Arginine is most commonly found in chocolate, a variety of nuts, seeds, and grains.

More than half a billion people are infected with the herpes simplex virus type 2, the virus that causes most cases of genital herpes, and nearly 24 million new cases happen per year.
That’s according to the first global estimate of the prevalence (total number of cases) and incidence (number of new cases) of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection.
Here are the estimates, published in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization and based on studies from around the world published in 2003:
* 536 million people aged 15-49 are infected with herpes simplex type 2 virus. That’s 16% of people in that age range.
* Every year, 23.6 million people aged 15-49 become infected with the herpes simplex type 2 virus.
The estimates only focus on HSV-2 among people aged 15-49; data came from studies published in 2003. Genital herpes can also be caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), but HSV-1 typically infects the mouth and HSV-2 typically infects the genitals. HSV-2 is usually spread through sex; it can also pass from mother to child during birth.
Most people with herpes simplex virus type 2 don’t know they’re infected and don’t have symptoms, note the researchers, who work at Imperial College London and the World Health Organization (WHO).
HSV-2 prevalence was higher among women than men and varied across world regions. Western European men had the lowest prevalence rate (13%) and women in sub-Saharan Africa had the highest prevalence rate (70%).
The researchers caution that their estimates “should not be taken as being definitive,” partly because some world regions had few HSV-2 studies to analyze.

More than 500 million people are infected worldwide with the virus that causes genital herpes and more than 20 million people become newly infected each year, according to a study published in the international public health journal, the Bulletin of the World Health Organization.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 is commonly spread through sexual contact and leads to lifelong infection. While painful genital ulcerations are the classical symptom, most people have mild symptoms and don’t know that they are infected. These persons can thus unknowingly infect others.
“Serious consequences include an increased risk of acquiring, and likely transmitting, HIV, and transmission from infected mothers to their babies during birth, which can cause brain damage and death,” says Dr George Schmid, Department of HIV/AIDS at the World Health Organization.
This first-ever estimate of the global burden found that roughly 16% of the world’s population in the 15-49 year-old age group were infected, with considerable geographic variation. Women are more commonly infected than men, with the highest prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa where up to 70% of women are infected.
The Bulletin of the World Health Organization is an international journal of public health with a special focus on developing countries. It is one of the world’s leading public health journals and the flagship periodical of the World Health Organization.

Genital herpes may infect 28 percent of women by age 49, according to the World Health Organization’s first global estimate of the prevalence of the incurable disease.
Women are more likely than men to have been infected with the main type of herpes simplex virus that causes the sexually transmitted infection, according to a report in the October edition of the WHO’s monthly bulletin. In some areas of sub- Saharan Africa, prevalence among women is as high as 70 percent.
The report is the first to estimate the global burden of the ulcer-causing disease, which increases the risk of HIV, can kill the babies of newly infected mothers, and causes distress and anxiety among sufferers. The reasons for the higher prevalence among women are unclear, and may suggest they are more susceptible to infection, authors Katharine Looker, Geoffrey Garnett and George Schmid wrote.
“Before HIV came along, genital herpes was everybody’s biggest fear,” Schmid, a medical officer with the WHO’s HIV/AIDS department in Geneva, said in a telephone interview today. “But it still is a disease with significant emotional and physical consequences.”
About 536 million people, or 16 percent of those aged 15 to 49 years, were living with HSV-2 in 2003, the report by WHO and researchers at London’s Imperial College said.
The estimate is based on a review of international blood-test data reported in at least 318 studies conducted since 1966. The authors estimate 12.8 million women and 10.8 million men aged 15 to 49 years were infected worldwide with the virus in 2003.

Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, trichomonas, and bacterial vaginosis (BV) can be treated and cured with antibiotics during pregnancy. There is no cure for viral STDs, such as genital herpes and HIV, but antiviral medication for herpes and HIV may reduce symptoms in the pregnant woman. For women who have active genital herpes lesions at the time of delivery, a cesarean delivery (C-section) may be performed to protect the newborn against infection. C-section is also an option for some HIV-infected women. Women who test negative for hepatitis B, may receive the hepatitis B vaccine during pregnancy.

The surest way to avoid transmission of sexually transmitted diseases is to abstain from sexual contact, or to be in a long-term mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who has been tested and is known to be uninfected.
Latex condoms, when used consistently and correctly, are highly effective in preventing transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Latex condoms, when used consistently and correctly, can reduce the risk of transmission of gonorrhea, chlamydia, and trichomoniasis. Genital ulcer diseases and human papillomavirus (HPV) infections can occur in both male and female genital areas that are covered or protected by a latex condom, as well as in areas that are not covered. Correct and consistent use of latex condoms can reduce the risk of genital herpes, syphilis, and chancroid only when the infected area or site of potential exposure is protected. While the effect of condoms in preventing human papillomavirus infection is unknown, condom use has been associated with a lower rate of cervical cancer, an HPV-associated disease.
