Sexually transmitted diseases, commonly called STDs, are diseases that are spread by having sex with someone who has an STD. You can get a sexually transmitted disease from sexual activity that involves the mouth, anus, vagina, or penis.
According to the American Social Health Organization, one out of four teens in the United States becomes infected with an STD each year and by the age of 25, half of all sexually active young adults will get an STD.
STDs are serious illnesses that require treatment. Some STDs, like AIDS, cannot be cured and are deadly. By learning more about STDs, you can find out ways to protect yourself from the following STDs.
* Genital herpes
* Human papilloma virus/Genital warts
* Hepatitis B
* Chlamydia
* Syphilis
* Gonorrhea (”Clap”)

What’s The Big Deal?
Genital herpes is not life threatening in and of itself. But having herpes sores makes it easier for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, to enter your body. Not only is there an increased risk for getting HIV if you have genital herpes, but having the two diseases together may also make each one worse.
A pregnant woman can pass genital herpes on to her baby, so it’s particularly serious during pregnancy. If you get infected near the end of pregnancy, the risk is highest. At least 30% and as many as 50% of newly infected pregnant women give the virus to their babies. For moms who were infected long before delivery, the risk is much lower. Less than 1% of babies born to mothers with an older genital herpes infection get the virus. And if a woman has an outbreak at delivery, a cesarean delivery is usually done.
You may have heard that genital herpes causes cervical cancer. That’s not exactly true. It may be a factor, but it’s not the main cause.
Genital herpes is a lifelong condition for which there is no cure. Having it can force you to make inconvenient changes in your life, particularly in your sex life, and it can cause you a lot of pain and discomfort. You simply would rather not have it.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections you can get by having sex with someone who has an infection. Having intercourse usually passes on these infections, but they can also be passed on through other types of sex, such as oral sex. Viruses or bacteria can cause STIs. Some of the most common STIs and their symptoms are listed below.
Types of STIs
Caused by bacteria
Chlamydia:
No symptoms may occur at first or at all, especially in women. Later symptoms for women may include itching around the vagina, a yellow, odorless discharge from the vagina, pain during sex, and needing to urinate often or having pain when urinating. Women may also have bleeding between periods or dull pain in the pelvic area. Symptoms for men may include pain or burning when urinating and a watery, milky-colored discharge from the penis.
Gonorrhea (or “GC”):
Men may have a thick, yellow discharge from the penis and pain when urinating or may have no symptoms. The opening of the penis may be sore. Gonorrhea doesn’t cause symptoms in most women. When symptoms do occur, women may have white, green or yellow discharge from the vagina, pain when urinating, spotting between periods, or heavy bleeding during periods. Sometimes fever and abdominal pain occur. Gonorrhea can cause sore throats in people who have oral sex or can cause pain in the anus in people who have anal sex.
Syphilis:
Early signs include a chancre (a painless, red sore). The sores may appear where you were touched during sex, including your genitals, anus, tongue and throat. The glands near the chancre may swell. A few months later, you may have a fever, sore throat, and headache, not feel hungry or have joint pain. A scaly rash may appear on the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet. After these symptoms pass, you may not have any symptoms for a number of years. When the symptoms return, the infections can affect the brain, spinal cord, and skin and bone.
Caused by viruses
Hepatitis B:
Symptoms may include muscle aches, fever, tiredness, loss of appetite, headache and dizziness. As the disease worsens, you may have dark urine, loose, light-coloured stools, yellow eyes and skin, and tenderness in the liver area (just below the ribs on the right side). Hepatitis B can be fatal if it leads to liver failure or liver cancer.
Herpes:
Symptoms start with tingling or itching around your genitals. Small blisters may form in the area and then pop open. When this happens, you might feel burning, especially when urinating. The sores then turn to scabs. During the first outbreak, you might have swollen glands, fever and body aches. But some people don’t have such obvious symptoms. Outbreaks may occur for the rest of your life, but usually become less frequent and less painful with time.
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV):
HIV is the virus that causes AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). It weakens your body’s ability to fight off disease. As your body’s immune system weakens, illnesses begin to develop until you can no longer fight them off. Symptoms may take years to develop and may include unusual infections, unexplained fatigue, night sweats and weight loss.
Human papillomavirus (HPV):
HPV may cause a growth of soft, flesh-coloured warts around the genital area or on the cervix. The warts are painless, but may be bothersome because of the way they look. Sometimes the virus causes warts that can’t be seen by the naked eye. There is a link between some types of HPV and cancer of the cervix; this is why Pap smears are so important.

You catch CMV from close, intimate contact with infected urine; saliva; respiratory, vaginal, or cervical secretions; breast milk; or semen. It can be sexually transmitted, but most people get CMV through close household contact. Poor people are much more likely to be infected as young children, probably because they live in crowded conditions.
Babies get it from their mothers before birth, during delivery, or in the first few weeks of life. The baby is infected during pregnancy if its mother has either a first-time CMV infection or a reactivation of a past one.
Women who have toddlers attending child care are often infected. CMV transmission is rapid in these places because urine and saliva are passed from child to child on dirty hands. Young children rarely have symptoms, but they excrete the virus in their urine and saliva for months to years. Anyone working in child care or in any area with lots of young diapered children is exposed to CMV.
It is often transmitted from blood transfusions because so many people, including blood donors, have CMV infections with no symptoms.
Most people are infected with CMV before they reach adulthood, but very few people experience any symptoms or signs of illness. People with AIDS and organ transplant recipients are at highest risk for serious CMV infection—either pneumonia or retinitis, an eye infection. Often, their own latent CMV infections will reactivate as their immune systems either weaken or are suppressed by drugs to prevent organ rejection.
People who need organ transplants are tested for antibodies to CMV. Doctors will try to match CMV-negative organ donors to CMV-negative organ recipients. But a match isn’t always possible and the CMV-negative organ recipient faces a risk of serious CMV infection from the transplanted organ weeks to months later. To prevent this, the doctor will give the transplant recipient an injection of CMV antibody.
CMV-negative organ recipients who need blood transfusions will receive CMV-negative blood. This blood is hard to come by and is saved for people who really need it. If no CMV-negative blood is available, the blood can be filtered to remove the cells containing CMV. Otherwise, transplant patients may become ill if they receive CMV-infected blood.

Genital herpes may not be deadly, but it can be physically painful and emotionally debilitating. Those who have it may suffer from painful sores as well as feelings of shame, regret, isolation, and undesirability.
“We, as a society, don’t do well with STDs,” says Terri Warren, R.N., owner of the Westover Heights Clinic in Portland, Ore., specializing in the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. “When people have a lifelong STD, they feel dirty, damaged, and unapproachable. Most people have a dramatic drop in self-esteem.”
Curtis Phinney of Rockville, Md., was devastated when he first discovered he had genital herpes. “I was very interested in finding a new successful long-term monogamous relationship,” says Phinney, who had been divorced before he became infected. “I was having difficulty as it was. With herpes I thought it would be impossible. I thought I was unlovable, untouchable, undesirable.”
Genital herpes is on the rise. Since the late 1970s, the number of Americans infected with the virus has increased 30 percent to about 45 million, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Genital herpes infects more than 1 of 5 adolescents and adults, the CDC says. It is more common in blacks than in whites, and more likely to infect women than men. Compared to 20 years ago, it’s about five times more common in 12- to 19-year-old whites and twice as common in adults ages 20 to 29.
The scary part is that most people with genital herpes don’t know they have it, and are unaware they may be spreading it to others, says Warren. Many have no symptoms or mistake their symptoms for something else, such as jock itch, insect bites, hemorrhoids, yeast infections, razor burn, or allergies to laundry detergent.
Of even greater concern is growing evidence that people with genital herpes are at greater risk of getting HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) if they have unprotected sex with someone infected with HIV. And HIV-infected people who are also infected with genital herpes may have more frequent and severe outbreaks and their episodes may be more difficult to treat.
In the past, genital herpes was diagnosed solely by visual inspection and laboratory culture of an active sore. Herpes may now be diagnosed with a blood test, even when no symptoms are apparent or after sores have healed. And while there is no cure for herpes, antiviral drugs have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration that greatly reduce the frequency of outbreaks and shorten their duration and severity.
